چکیده

In order to determine the relationship between the faint X-ray and faint radio source populations, and hence to help understand the X-ray and radio emission mechanisms in those faint source populations, we have made a deep 1.4GHz Very Large Array radio survey of the 13 +38 XMM/ROSAT X-ray Survey Area. From a combined data set of 10hours B configuration data and 14hours A configuration data, maps with 3.35 resolution and a noise limit of 7.5μJy were constructed. A complete sample of 449 sources was detected within a 30 diameter region above a 4σ detection limit of 30μJy, at the map centre, making this one of the deepest radio surveys at this frequency. The differential source count shows a significant upturn at sub-milliJansky flux densities, similar to that seen in other deep surveys at 1.4GHz (e.g. the Phoenix survey), but larger than that seen in the HDF which may have been selected to be under-dense. This upturn is well modelled by the emergence of a population of medium redshift starforming galaxies which dominate at faint flux densities. The brighter source counts are well modelled by AGNs.

Radio observations of the XMM - Newton / Chandra 13 hr deep survey field

Our VLA observations of the XMM-Newton/Chandra 13hr deep survey field (see Page et al., this proceedings) result in one of the two deepest 1.4GHz radio maps ever made. Within the 15′ radius field covered by the deep X-ray data (0.19 deg), a total of 556 radio sources are detected, down to a 4σ flux limit of 28μJy. Of the 214 Chandra sources, 55 have radio counterparts. The sub-arcsecond accurac...

X-ray and optical properties of X-ray sources in the 13hr XMM-Newton/Chandra deep survey

The 13hr XMM-Newton/Chandra deep survey is the first of two extremely deep XMM-Newton fields observed by the XMM-OM consortium. A 120 ks Chandra mosaic, covering 0.2 deg, provides sensitive, confusion-free point source detection with sub-arcsecond positions, while the 200 ks XMM-Newton observation provides high quality X-ray spectroscopy over the same sky area. We have optical spectroscopic ide...

We (Pierre et al. 2003) have designed a medium deep large area X-ray survey with XMM – the XMM Large Scale Structure survey, XMM-LSS – with the scope of extending the cosmological tests attempted using ROSAT cluster samples to two redshift bins between 0 < z < 1 while maintaining the precision of earlier studies. The optimal survey design was found to be an 8 • × 8 • area, paved with 10 ks XMM ...

XMM - Newton survey of the Local Group galaxy M 33 ⋆

In an XMM-Newton raster observation of the bright Local Group spiral galaxy M 33 we study the population of X-ray sources (X-ray binaries, supernova remnants) down to a 0.2–4.5 keV luminosity of 10 35 erg s −1 – more than a factor of 10 deeper than earlier ROSAT observations. EPIC hardness ratios and optical and radio information are used to distinguish between different source classes. The sur...

Xmm-newton Studies of the Source Population and the Hot Interstellar Medium in Nearby Galaxies

First results of X-ray source population studies in nearby galaxies show the potential of XMM-Newton observations. I will report on first XMM-Newton M31 results and on three of our XMM-Newton projects, an X-ray source population study in the Magellanic Clouds (MCs), a deep raster survey of M33, and an investigation of the hot interstellar medium (ISM) in the halo of edge-on galaxies. XMM-Newton...
